McMichael Family Membership: buy before the 2026 closure?
McMichael says the gallery will temporarily close after July 26, 2026 for a major transformation. Membership benefits remain attractive, but a new family membership needs explicit confirmation of how the closure affects validity, admission and extensions.

The direct answer
Do not buy without written closure and extension terms.
Wait unless McMichael confirms in writing how a new family membership will be handled during the closure. For a pre-closure single visit, use regular admission or Free Family Sunday; membership is not a sound break-even purchase when future gallery access is uncertain.
Choose it when
- Families supporting the collection regardless of short-term admission value
- Households receiving a confirmed extension or alternative benefits during closure
- Families using member program pricing and free parking before closure
Pause or skip when
- You are buying only to save on repeat gallery admission after July 26
- The membership office cannot confirm closure treatment in writing
- Free Family Sunday or one regular visit meets the immediate need
The current membership page groups basic memberships, including Family, within a $45–$180 range but does not expose a reliable current family-specific amount. Call 905-893-1121 ext. 2207 before payment.
What the visit actually buys
Understand the experience before the checkout.
The gallery closure changes every calculation
McMichael publishes a temporary closure beginning after July 26, 2026. A one-year membership bought now cannot be evaluated like a normal 12-month admission product without extension or reopening terms.
Benefits are broader than admission
Basic members receive complimentary gallery admission and parking, two annual guest passes, shop and dining savings, program discounts, event invitations and reciprocal privileges at participating Canadian galleries.
A low-cost visit alternative exists
Regular adult admission is $20, seniors $17, youth 25 and under $7, children five and under free, plus $7 parking. The third Sunday of each month is currently Free Family Sunday.
Family value analysis
Value is personal usage—not the biggest advertised saving.
Normal break-even math is suspended
Two adults pay $40 admission plus $7 parking on an ordinary visit, but only visits before closure can currently be counted with confidence. Do not project inaccessible months as savings.
Support value is a separate decision
A family may still join to support Canadian and Indigenous art, programming and transformation. That is a philanthropic reason, not an admission-savings claim, and should be treated separately.
Free Sunday can answer the immediate need
If the goal is one family visit before closure, the monthly free program may be more rational than membership. Check capacity, programs and parking conditions for that date.
A realistic family plan
Protect time, energy and the part children care about most.
- 01
Call the membership office
Ask for the current Family price, named-member definition, closure start, extension or freeze policy, reopening estimate and which offsite or reciprocal benefits continue.
- 02
Request written confirmation
Save the email or terms that apply to the purchase. A verbal expectation is not enough for a membership whose normal access is interrupted.
- 03
Choose visit, support or wait
Buy admission for one pre-closure visit, join only when support and confirmed benefits justify it, or wait until reopening terms are clear.
Access, sensory load and weather
“Family-friendly” is not one universal experience.
McMichael publishes visitor access information and its gallery, grounds and programs can have different routes. Confirm accessible parking, entrances, wheelchairs, support-person arrangements and which facilities remain available during the transformation period.
Gallery visits are indoors, while the grounds and trails are outdoor experiences. After the temporary gallery closure, do not assume grounds, parking, café or program access remains unchanged without checking official updates.
Accessibility, sensory conditions and operating status can change. Contact the venue before purchase when a specific accommodation is necessary for the visit to work.
