Best free and low-cost farms for kids in Toronto and the GTA
Last verified August 15, 2026
“Free” should describe the actual entry—not hide the ferry, parking, feed or event ticket. These five options deliver a useful basic animal or farm visit for little or no admission, with the extra costs made visible.
The shortest useful answer
Riverdale is the best truly free city visit; Willowtree is the strongest free farm-and-playground stop.
Choose Far Enough only as part of a Toronto Islands day, Carma when a low-cost hands-on animal visit matters, and Watson when its market location already fits the route.
| Place | Published base cost | Best for | Realistic stay |
|---|---|---|---|
| Riverdale Farm | Free | Central Toronto + calm animal visit | 60–90 min |
| Far Enough Farm | Free farm; paid transport | A full Toronto Islands day | 30–60 min at farm |
| Willowtree Farm | Free basic area | Animals + playground | 60–120 min |
| Carma Farms | $2 entry | Short hands-on animal stop | 30–60 min |
| Watson Farms | No general admission | Market + simple free play | 45–90 min |
Five useful budget outings
What each place does—and what “free” excludes.
Cabbagetown, Toronto
Riverdale Farm
Free admission · Best truly free central-Toronto farm visitThe City of Toronto operates this 7.5-acre working farm in Riverdale Park West. Families come for livestock, heritage farm buildings, gardens and a calm walk—not rides or an entertainment-farm schedule.
- Cost to notice
- Street/lot parking, TTC fares, drinks and food are separate. Free entry does not mean every nearby part of the day is free.
- Best plan
- Allow 60–90 minutes. Combine it with the park or a Cabbagetown walk rather than expecting a full-day attraction.
Centre Island, Toronto Islands
Far Enough Farm
Free farm admission · Best as part of a Toronto Islands dayFar Enough Farm is a small hobby and petting farm near Centreville with domestic and exotic animals. It makes sense as one stop in an island itinerary, not as the only reason to pay for and wait for transportation.
- Cost to notice
- The farm is free, but the Toronto Island ferry or another boat service is not. Food, Centreville rides and rentals are separate.
- Best plan
- Visit earlier in the island day, then use the beaches, playgrounds and walking paths. Check ferry capacity and return queues before departure.
Port Perry
Willowtree Farm
Free playground and animal experience · Best free farm stop in the eastern GTAWillowtree publishes free access to its animal experience and playground, including slides, climbing, a sensory corn pit and sandbox. The on-site market and café make it easy to turn a short stop into lunch.
- Cost to notice
- Food, market purchases, pick-your-own crops and special ticketed events are separate. The free area should not be described as including every seasonal activity.
- Best plan
- Allow 60–120 minutes for the free area. Check current PYO or event pages only if the family wants to add a paid activity.
Markham
Carma Farms
$2 entry; feed costs extra · Best ultra-low-cost animal visit near MarkhamCarma’s published animal-area entry is intentionally simple: a small admission buys access to the animals, while feed is optional. It works for a child who wants animal contact without a large play-farm bill.
- Cost to notice
- Feed is $5 plus a $5 refundable bucket deposit under the verified policy. Last entry and feed sales stop one hour before closing; outside food and dogs are not allowed.
- Best plan
- Treat it as a short 30–60 minute animal stop. Review the animal-contact rules with children before buying feed.
Bowmanville
Watson Farms
No general farm admission · Best free market-and-playground add-onWatson Farms says there is no farm admission for its basic family-fun area, including the petting zoo, Watsonland playground and photo opportunities. It is a useful stop when shopping at the market or passing through Durham.
- Cost to notice
- Special events, pick-your-own produce, food and products cost extra. Confirm that the desired free feature is operating on the day.
- Best plan
- Allow 45–90 minutes for the basic free stop; reserve more time only for a separately confirmed event or picking session.
Three low-spend itineraries
Build the outing around location, not a long attraction checklist.
Riverdale + park walk
Animals first, then green space and a packed snack. The farm is the anchor and no extra attraction ticket is needed.
Far Enough + free island spaces
Pay for the ferry, then use the farm, playgrounds, trails and beach. Skip ride tickets if the goal is a low-cost day.
Willowtree + market lunch
Use the free animal and playground area, then decide whether food or seasonal picking is worth adding.
The honest budget
Four costs that disappear from “free things to do” lists.
- 1
Transportation. Island ferries, TTC, gasoline, toll routes and parking can exceed admission.
- 2
Food. Pack only where permitted. Some private farms restrict outside food or reserve seating for customers.
- 3
Animal feed. Entry can be free or very low-cost while feed cups or buckets are an optional paid add-on.
- 4
Seasonal upgrades. PYO fruit, fall festivals, rides and ticketed events are usually separate from a free playground or animal area.
